No one wants to experience physical pain, firstly not being able to move the way you wish and to have a constant feeling of limitation or disability that affects your life and daily activities.

Long lasting pain or injury can be a constant daily frustration causing emotional symptoms such as anger, sadness, hopelessness and or other emotions that can be challenging to hold or contain without becoming depressed.
Physical pain can also lead to a person having to push through or ignore a part of the body in order to function daily. Having to limit oneself at work, or in a sport or hobby can create an underlying stress in the body that becomes something else to carry and can feel overwhelming.
Often people go from one specialist to another seeking help, sometimes finding a little benefit long term. Sometimes one can get some relief only to find that in 2 weeks time the pain returns.

There is a difference between pain from an actual injury, pain from inflammation, pain from stress activities and pain from disease as examples. Each way that pain is experienced for an individual is different and requires a different approach in recovery.

So how does one apply and use somatic bodywork treatments when it comes to pain. Often when I see clients who carry long term pain, where treatments with chiropractors and other physical experts have not held or resolved the issue, and it is not a disease, it can be coming from something deeper. It can be psychosomatic or from previous trauma and life issues.

Our health is deeply affected by childhood, by relationships, by work and all that we encounter daily. Any past trauma that is being triggered in daily situations creates a stress pattern in the body that often goes unseen and un-felt and is often side lined and never confronted. We are often taught to push through and continue with things despite there being discomfort, a lot of the time it is also because we lack time and the patience needed to really discover what is there.
We have to work, look after the kids and clean, there is often no time to tend to discomfort or unresolved patterns. Many times there is also little ability or capacity within the nervous system to go into unresolved places and feelings in a way where you are able to resource yourself. To resource oneself means to harness good feelings and safety in a way where you feel stronger in yourself.

A deep pattern in the brain takes about 4-9 months to change with constant work. This may seem like a long time, but it is also a beautiful thing to actually have a time line and know that it is possible to really reset old patterns that could benefit your health and relieve a pain pattern long term.

It is hard to be with pain, to acknowledge its presence and messages. To be willing to change in a way where we are willing to really listen to the body first and adjust to what is needed. Where body and mind work as one and we are learning to be gentle and kind to the self. Slowing down and adjusting life, seeing limits not as set backs but as regulating factors in life itself and finding a way to come into alignment with those limits in a positive way.

Attached here is a link describing the different types of pain a person may get in order for you to understand that pain actually is complex and varies in stages and its causes. It is a deep manifestation in the body signaling discontent and a message of no more and change required. Our bodies are constantly communicating and sending messages in hope of good care and health. Our systems are created to signal us when someone is not in line with our natural state of being.

In somatic bodywork I often encounter individuals with chronic pain. Pain that has been present for a long period of time without knowing the full reason why and or having tried many normal treatments for it without success. Stiff shoulders, headaches and migraines, stomach pains and irritable bowl syndrome, unknown constipation, back pains and more.
I work with your breath, slow movement and soft touch to see what the body needs to say and the pattern of pain being held. This patterning of pain is the way in which your body copes, we slow down and apply somatic tools for you to discover your bodies message to you. I look at your childhood, current relationships which includes work and other activities in order for us to understand why your body is holding pain and how to release it over time. I watch your body intently while you communicate, stopping you at times to help you discover the holding pain pattern. In this way you start to discover your body and triggers which gives you conscious choices in daily challenges allowing you to respond without pressure.

This is not a quick fix and it takes time. It probably took years for this blockage or pain pattern to occur in your system and it takes time for you to unlearn bad holding body habits and to listen deeply to your body in a new way, breath with it, and relax into it when in more challenging situations. It may also mean making some new life choices and changing toxic cycles or people in your life. Together we work through frustration, anger, pain, any suppressed emotions and trauma. It takes time and a willingness to be there for the parts of yourself that are literally screaming for attention and love.
Somatic bodywork can bring in anything from slow movements with breath, to releasing rage in a sacred way or ceremonial holding space, to body trembling exercises called TRE.
Slowly allowing for deep holding patterns in the body to surface, be released and for new ways of self-relating to replace older archaic learnt behaviours.

I am deeply passionate about this work. Having had a prolapse myself and being limited in my own capacity in life brought about a big understanding of how holding patterns from life affect certain parts of the body negatively and create blockages and weaknesses for us in order to listen deeper and open up with grace and humbleness to the wonder of this body. A prolapse may just be a prolapse for example and some people recover easier then others. For some people an injury like this may bring up a lot of emotions and may be a massive trigger that when you think of it creates a deep unease. This is usually a signal for deeper work and this is what I offer.

In my work with pain patterns I often discover deep layers of stress relating to pain or force in situations in a persons life. Perhaps shame, discontent, a feeling of being stuck, frustration, unmet sadness. In some cases big life traumas that never had the time or correct containment for recovery. These things affect us in the long term. They are emotional or energetic impacts on our system that accumulate over time and affect our health in the form of pain or injury. With regulation and release, pleasure can be learned instead once again. Pleasure replaces pain pathways in the nervous system and help reduce the pain threshold.

Our bodies are speaking if only we take time to listen to them. With bodywork healing we learn to listen, we learn to discover with curiosity what is waiting to be held in a tender and profound way in each of us. This is uniting with ourselves and finding a deeper connection in the self.

Generally most people book me for a consultation session of an hour where we meet and address your needs, goals, background and how things work. Then my suggestion is to try 10 sessions at a minimum, 2 a week or 1 a week to actually give us a chance to release and delve into your pain pattern using various techniques and connection. Deeper childhood or big traumatic situations require longer therapy. We need the time to undo old patterns and teach your nervous system to do things differently and also at times to resolve areas that have not been met. You loose nothing in sessions and as we progress you can start to see shifts in your life and health if you apply what you learn. Everything is done in small doses from any movements in the physical body to tackling emotional relational issues too.

At the bottom of this article is an example of an emotional pain chart. This is only an example of how some people have found certain issues to relate to the areas of the body and is not a fit for all:

<![CDATA[Spiritual bypassing]]>Fri, 13 Dec 2019 12:08:15 GMThttp://holistisk-utvikling.no/nyheterblog/spiritual-bypassing
When working in the “alternative sector” with therapies and healing I often encounter many wonderful people striving for oneness and enlightenment. There are many people that have experienced pain and suffering, but also some who are just seeking improvement. It is wonderful to see so many people striving for inner harmony within themselves. I believe this is the essence of our human nature, to improve, to seek our higher selves, to become complete and unify with the light and find ultimate peace and love.
I always think of a big oak tree, strong, wise and a tree that has and can weather many storms. Each oak tree sheds its acorns, a little seed filled with the entire essence of itself, to grow just like itself, to become just as big and strong if it is able. I see us the same way, we are the ultimate light of God here on earth, and we are the seeds of God or the light in its completeness. We have it all inside us to grow and develop and become enlightened beings over many lifetimes in most cases as this process takes time and practice. I treasure this in people, that divine essence, that spark, that blueprint inside just like a seed. It is sacred, it is unique and it is the will of the universe.

Breaking the shell
We all have the ability and opportunities in our lives to make good choices, to access healing in most cases, and to improve. Some people with harder childhoods and traumas may find it a constant battle to just attain their idea of normality, but in many cases even with extremely hurt individuals the pain of life helps break them into a more spiritual self, and in many cases gives an extra strength to continue forward. This can be viewed as the breaking of the shell, where the pain can break one open to a deeper sense.
Breaking the shell

The inner healer
Inside each person is an inner healer for themselves, a higher aspect of themselves, a doctor of sorts. This is the energy of the light, of God, leading his children back to their own fullness. Every person wants to feel complete, wants to heal the small or large parts of themselves and be able to better connect with others in peace and love.

Different paths
There are many paths to enlightenment and many people are trying them these days. There are paths like Buddhism, Zen, qigong, religious sects like Christianity, Catholicism, Hinduism etc., the path of Tantra, Sufism, Pagan rituals and magic, plant medicine, the warrior paths, and many others. Many people are born into spiritual beliefs or religious paths and keep following what they are taught, others change or discard those paths for others, and some don’t believe at all. All paths are life and life is one long road to knowing the self.

Blockages and tests
When following ones spiritual path and growing from it, one will encounter many blockages, or tests, hurts and pains, truths and half-truths. This path has countless illusions and booby traps along the way. There are names for it such as ego, shadow-side, pain body, traumas in some cases, darkness etc.

Ignoring the ego
I don’t believe ego is negative or something to be ignored it is a step in our process and has been created for a reason. Yes we are supposed to eventually overcome our ego aspects, but they take time and work as love comes more into the spirit, there is less reason for the ego to react.
Many times on the path to inner development we encounter beautiful moments of peace, harmony and love. They can fill one with joy and bliss. There are also many masters teaching this such as well-known Eckhart Tolle or Mooji etc. Sadly when the ego is mentioned by many of these people, it is interpreted as bad or must not be tolerated or seen. This can create spiritual bypassing where people ignore the ego, we say it is bad and holds us back so I won’t have it, I won’t see it in what I do. The idea is beautiful as people want to be good, but unless the ego has been mastered it is still there and using this is then an illusion. One may think mentally they are in bliss but in fact it may be ego itself.

Bypassing pain
Another common way of spiritual bypassing is when pain is overwhelming. The pain body as some may know it. When people have incurred trauma, or even if no trauma has occurred but one still feels a lot of pain internally, spirituality can be used to bypass that pain. They may focus on I am light, everything is only light, there is only love and truly believe it, but without having faced their own shadows and the pain inside. Often in cases like this, a dark night of the soul will show over time and can be difficult to integrate unless one can be honest about where one really is in the process of learning. One can choose to ignore a dark night of the soul but realize that balance must always occur. All aspects of our development must be integrated in balance and not without denying a part of ourselves.
Embodiment
Spiritual bypassing comes in many forms and illusions. Attainment is not a goal, it is a journey, and when seeing advanced beings on the path of enlightenment they generally preach the word of compassion and learning and share the light with others once ready and called with Gods permission towards this step. This comes with further tests and growth; it requires a sense of being the learning not knowledge, but complete inner action and stability. We have such powerful and strong minds, that often we think ourselves into a practice or belief rather than to embodying it completely. Embodying means to integrate it on every level, physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually and into life itself through every action and deed without having to watch it all the time or oneself, only awareness of the movement of the cosmos. It is who we are, not something to think or mentalize about.

Mentalization
Why do people mentalize? We are used to thinking as adults. As children we play, life is open, we are connected but slowly we are taught the strength and needs from the mind in the world. It is normal and necessary for functioning and survival. Through this mind education we also learn how to push the mind, even force it sometimes in order to acquire what we want or need. We may be tired but yet have to work so we push, something intellectual challenges us or requires learning so we push to achieve, we may be sick or having a hard day but we need to tend to kids, clean the house, study and push more. We live in a world of achievement and that success brings approval in society. Often we need to study a lot and use the mind to achieve to survive and attain higher standards of living. It is not negative, sometimes it is good that we mentally challenge ourselves and progress to survive and thrive but not at the cost of losing the other areas of development, such as emotional, physical and spiritual. Those areas are just as important and will constantly need refinement too. If those areas are left without nourishment and strength, then the mind takes over and we think ourselves into spirituality. The mind is strong, we can think ourselves over hot coals these days, so why not into spirituality as well.

All areas are important

Dismissing ourselves
When we bypass, on some level we dismiss ourselves, we ignore an important part. All the parts of ourselves are needed as completeness means unifying the self. There is no short cut to our spirituality through the mind, the mind is there to direct the ship and maintain the body and path. The path is long and there is often the temptation to skip the struggle and pain and do only the fun practices. Questioning oneself many times helps to see more clearly in situations, and also accepting the consequences for actions of decisions. When making decisions internally about spirituality, know there will be mistakes and errors, also over time with new learning, old learning or beliefs might also shift. Over time we may see the error of some beliefs, being then able to learn how to tell what is right and what isn’t, what comes from ego and what doesn’t, how to be humbler in decisions because perhaps later one might improve the wisdom further.

Avoidance and denial
This leads me to spiritual bypassing to avoid errors and feeling hurt. Avoidance and denial are common. We do this for many reasons, we might fear rejection, we want to fit in, we want to be equal to peers, we want to be important maybe even superior, so in many cases from fear or ego, but mostly it is because we don’t want to feel pain. However, often pain is seen as what breaks one through to something more. Pain is the very fuel we need often to strive for bliss; they are but the same coin. This is not punishment; there is a difference between pain and suffering. Touching a hot stove reminds us it is hot and not to do it. That is the nervous system of the body, but we have a spiritual nervous system too. When we avoid the shadows or ego to be only light, we are not being true to ourselves, in a sense we are lying to ourselves. Lies consume time and hold one back, for it is only in truth that we come alive.
Identifying with our practice
Sometimes we get so caught up in a spiritual practice, and the effects of that practice or the dogma, that we get lost in an idea of where we should be going. We practice and practice and have effects and then are sure we are something because of it. We have an identity as a spiritual person or practitioner of a big teaching. We force ourselves to be that practice and in a sense again force it. Using spiritual tools or teachings to be someone or something other than compassionate, real and present. Often a sense of falseness or non-presence can be felt in these cases. Also obsessiveness can settle in because without the practice I am not enough.

Humbleness and grace

Being humble to the process and grateful for every moment is one of the best ways to internally stay aware and embodied. Humble to God’s grace, open to learning, open with one’s heart and willing if needed to go through a shadow when and if it comes with gratitude and hopefully grace. Grace can’t always be guaranteed. But to bow ones head before the greatness of the universe and realize even in our greatness, there is another greatness. Being humble for life and the path.

Take your time
Be authentic and your unique self. Seek the truth and learn the inner freedom of the self, free each chain of inner slavery with inner conviction and glory. One by one, you will gain strength to overcome the next, don’t rush, take your time, feel your body and let the spirit grow strong.

Safety and having a non-intimidating space is essential so we will start the night with an interview of Guido. Space will be as open as possible so subjects and talks can move around on what the crowd are interested in. Among other things we will hear about some experiences and discoveries Guido has made, what issues does he often see in men he has worked with, and what are the solutions. What does the path of tantra yoga teach about relationship with self, others, and sexuality. We can also move into practical things like typical challenges we might often see in relationships, physical or emotional, and what tools can be applied etc.

There will also be some simple breathing/physical exercises. Guido has a lot of techniques and tools to share and it can be good to get personal experience with some of these so we can use them in our every day lives.
